„A School of Fish“ Op. 64
Snow’s perlendes Klavierspiel.

„to the stars“ – CD launch

Reviews: Ave Maria Op. 110
I am very honoured and grateful that I received a commission in 2023 to write an Ave Maria for baritone and organ. The result was firstly Ave Maria op. 110, (5′) for baritone and organ. This composition was then followed by Ave Maria op. 110 no. 2 for baritone, violin, cello and organ which then had its first performance on the 8th of December 2023 at the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at the 9.30 am service at the Stiftskirche St. Michael in Beromünster, Lucerne. The same evening I sang this song at the organ in the Kirche Dreikönigen (Church of 3 Kings) in Zurich. Article from the Anzeiger für das Michelsamt.”

Portrait of Susannah Snow (2011), 82cm x 101cm
by Kurt Hediger
I am truly honoured that the known and respected artist Kurt Hediger wished to paint a portrayal of me whilst I played the piano. During seven sittings at home in Fleckenstein Chorhof, Stift St. Michael Beromünster, Switzerland in 2010 and 2011, Kurt Hediger quietly painted whilst I practised pieces which included my then recently composed works for piano quartet, “Romance” and “On a Spring Day”.

King David 10-string lyre harp
I am very happy to share with you that I have begun playing a King David 10-string lyre harp – I just adore this precious instrument!
After years of having accompanied myself with the organ when I sang psalms in church, I thought it would be wonderful to be able to play a lyre harp as had originally been used by psalmists and played by David, the shepherd boy who had also been able to write psalms and console King Saul with his music making; later David became King himself after having married King Saul’s daughter. Searching online as to where I could find a 10-string lyre harp, I discovered the Marini family workshop in Pennsylvania, USA, headed by Alexander Marini. Patiently and eagerly waiting my turn for about a year, Alexander Marini could finally begin to make my now very own Davidic harp. It was then completed at Easter 2022 and what a wonderful new found love it has become for me!
Please discover more about the Marini family of harpists and their atelier: https://www.marinimadeharps.com/contact.htm
Coincidentally, Alexander Marini’s wife is also called Sue and Sue has released a collection of beautiful songs and hymns which she skilfully arranged for the King David Harp.
This lyre harp has been crafted from a beautiful cherry wood and has 10 strings, as are mentioned in the scriptures. With the use of levers, notes can be raised to double the notes up to 20, even extending to more with the use of harmonics. The strings can also be tuned down to create the flats or play them enharmonically (play the lower letter name and raise the lever to create the same pitch.)
One can stand or sit to play. For the psalms I either stand at the pulpit or on the empore to sing, lead and accompany the congregation with the harp and then I walk back to the organ for the Hallelujah. I use my right hand mostly to play the melody and the left for the accompaniment but often interchange using both hands to form the melody or accompaniment. For the psalms I mainly play chords, either the notes simultaneously or as an arpeggio and enjoy commencing the psalm with a glissando in the appropriate key and I change the levers with my left hand, “hugging” the harp for better balance. One only uses the thumb to the fourth (ring) finger to play the harp, with mainly the index finger often being used for single notes and then incorporating the thumb until the fourth finger for other notes and chords. The C strings are coloured red and the F is blue – so it is traditionally for harps for easier orientation. I chose to have my harp carved with scrolls, assimilating the horns of the sheep in biblical times in the Holy Land. And fittingly, the reverse side of the harp has a Star of David as its sound hole.
I have now been practising daily and have immensely enjoyed playing the harp in these last weeks as an accompanying instrument for the psalms and also as a solo or accompanying instrument during Offertory and Communion in the Church of St. Peter and Paul, Zurich and in the Stiftskirche St. Michael in Beromünster.
